NRI Tax Filing: Common Mistakes to Avoid

Filing taxes as an NRI comes with unique challenges. Here are the most common mistakes we see and how to avoid them.

1. Incorrect Residential Status

Many NRIs incorrectly determine their residential status. The 182-day rule has exceptions, and the 60-day rule has been modified for Indian citizens earning above Rs 15 lakh.

2. Missing DTAA Benefits

India has DTAA with 90+ countries. Failing to claim relief means paying tax twice on the same income.

3. Ignoring TDS on Property

If you sell property in India, the buyer must deduct 20% TDS (plus surcharge and cess). Many NRIs are unaware of this and face complications later.
